Shanty Requirements

Artists should take the following requirements into consideration when designing or developing an idea to submit a successful proposal.

  1. Environment. Project participants should leave only tracks on the lake. The lake is a quiet place, consequently generators are not allowed at any time. If you require power there are many options using deep cycle batteries and even renewable methods to charge.
  2. Design. The main obstacle to working on the lake is the harsh environment. The lake is very windy, which places incredible strain and wear on structures. Shanties must be built soundly out of durable materials. Although there are virtually no building codes on the lake, any small bits that come off your Shanty, will be covered by snow and consequently frozen, rendering it litter. The design of your shanty should take the harsh environment into consideration.
  3. Structure. The Ramsey County Water Patrol requires everything to have walls. If you have questions about this, contact us.
  4. Safety. One of the few codes involving structures on the ice is the placement of reflective material on all sides. This applies to any thing on the ice. Think of speeding cars and snowmobiles at night. Reflective tape works well on irregular structures. (See DNR requirements http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/regulations/fishing/)
  5. Mobility. Your Shanty must be easily moveable to avoid freezing to the ice. One common option is ‘skis’. Igloos or other structures that rest directly on the ice are not allowed.

Performance Considerations

Art Shanty Projects encourage performances to occur outdoors rather than inside shanties to be as accessible as possible. If your idea requires an intimate indoor space, please describe it in your proposal. Please note that a proposal for a project to happen inside a specific shanty is subject to approval from those artists. On-Ice Programming should occur on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 4pm.

  1. Environment. Successful proposals will consider the unique environment of the shanty community and our host lake, will engage audiences, and be feasible overall.
  2. Engagement. Details concerning the production of the performance and how your project engages participants in the event.
  3. Logistics. Please include your preferred site location, time frame (a 30 minute dance; an 8 hour reading; a game played each weekend, etc), top three choices for days and times of the program, and any technical requirements to ensure the feasibility of your performance.

Proposals not selected for a stipend may be able to present their works without funding. All performing artists are required to submit a project proposal. Scheduling priority will be given to stipend winners.

Project Proposal Narrative

Please make certain to include details in the proposal speaking to the following requirements.

  1. Narrative (Limit 1000 words): Tell us about the shanty you would like to make. What is it called? What interaction/activity will take place inside or around it? What will a visitor to your shanty see, hear, do, feel or learn?
  2. Artistic Goals (Limit 300 words): How does your proposal fit into the mission of and artistic goals of the On-Ice Program? What is the plan for audience interaction?
  3. Feasibility (Limit 300 words): Address your ability to build and capacity staff your shanty throughout the project period. Demonstrate an understanding of design requirements With over 1000 visitors per day, how will the interactive aspect of your Shanty accommodate the potential flow of traffic?

Project Proposal Images

Please include relevant visual supporting material (drawings of proposed shanty, links to video clips of performances) and any other materials that will help the jury understand your proposal. (Up to five images.)

Selection Criteria

All proposals will be reviewed by a panel of professional artists, curators, and representatives from the Art Shanty Projects advisory board based on the following criteria.

  • Incorporation of Art Shanty Projects mission and values.
  • Quality of plan for audience interaction.
  • Understanding of design requirements.
  • Feasibility of proposed project. Evidence of capacity to successfully build and staff your project.

Tips

  1. Consider working in teams, there are many physical and logistical challenges that are much easier when working with others. Collaboration is valuable for a successful project, but artists should also be realistic about the vision they wish to accomplish.
  2. Think realistically about staffing open hours for your shanty. The On-Ice Project lasts 4 weeks and 4 weekends. Artists are required to be open for each of those weekend days from 10-4.
  3. The lake sees intense winds; design your structure/programming to minimize the chance of materials falling off and being frozen in the ice.
